Is Anybody There?
A small group meet for what looks like a seance but turns out to be an examination the English ghost story. Three of the group each perform a ghost story and after a suitable break in the proceedings (to raise spirits of a different kind in the bar), we present a full dramatisation of the master of the genre’s most famous story, M R James’ ‘Oh, whistle and I’ll come to you, my lad’
How will this work?
Well, the casting is extremely flexible. Ideally a minimum of four actors, who will be very busy or a maximum of eight! I’m open to all ages and genders, of course. Similarly, I want to make the performing as relaxed as possible. The scripted pieces (the short introduction to the form and all of Act Two), should be learnt but the three ghost stories in Act One can be learnt or read from the page, whichever makes the performer more confident and comfortable! There are literally hundreds of ghost stories (and I’ve read a great many of them!), so it makes sense to tailor the final choice to the successful auditionees!
Scripts will be distributed in early October but physical rehearsals won’t begin until January 2027, starting with a read through on Wednesday 6th January and rehearsing through until the performances. The feeling we’re aiming for is a cosy night in a book lined study sitting around roaring fire while the wind roars outside and a branch taps gently on the window pane…except there aren’t any trees near the house, are there?

The passage attached is the audition piece to prepare. You maybe asked to cold read a section of Act Two, purely to match voices.
